Directions
With smoky spices and a bit of brown sugar, these Smoky Sweet Potatoes please even the most discerning palate. The sweet potatoes steam inside the oven, with margarine and spices until they are tender and caramelized.
As I’ve been preparing my menu for pre-Yom Kippur, I have certain habits. There are certain foods that my family relies on. Now, normally it’s good to shake things up in cooking. But before a fast is not the time to reinvent the wheel. We ALWAYS eat sweet potatoes before a fast.
Sweet potatoes provide carbohydrates that are lower on the glycemic index. This is just a fancy way of saying that the carbs take longer to be converted to blood sugar. This lends to blood sugar stability and in my experience, a much easier fast. You don’t want to start your day already low.
So, I set out to find the absolute best sweet potato dish I could include in my menu. I am excited to share this recipe with the world. I have tested it now many times, on many different palates. These potatoes are reliably popular. They can be frozen and rewarmed. They can be served room temperature if you prefer. It’s a versatile dish that will suit any Yom Tov or Shabbat menu, such as with this Pomegranate-Red Wine Brisket or this sweet Maple-roasted Chicken.
This is my new favorite way to eat sweet potatoes, and I am looking forward to whipping up a fresh batch on Tuesday. May you have an easy and meaningful fast.
