MISC SUBJECTS

Here are some ideas for other subjects to fill out your academic schedule.

Vocabulary and Spelling

I have been creating weekly packets with spelling words, vocabulary definitions, worksheets and a weekly test.  Those are available here.

Penmanship

I don’t know about you, but my 4th grader has terrible handwriting.  I’m using The Print Penmanship Workbook and Handwriting: Cursive.

Physical Education

When the weather permits, we go outside and play games. Otherwise, we will do a YouTube kids exercise video indoors.  We also sometimes do a dance party! Freeze dance is one of the kids favorite indoor games. And if all that fails, you can always play the Floor is Lava!

Art

Art has been so great this year.  I can't believe how easy it has been. We subscribe to letsmakeart.com and they send my daughter a monthly box of Art supplies. The videos are released by email on the first of the month. My 9 year old picks what project to work on each week then has a blast with the extra supplies at the end of the month.

Music

Music class has been such a pleasure for my 9 year old.  She is taking violin lessons via Zoom from a local music school.  I highly recommend searching your local area for inexpensive online lessons. Some schools will even rent you instruments. If that doesn't work out, search YouTube for lessons. You'd be surprised how much you can access for free!

Foreign Language

If you’d like to teach your child a second language, try DinoLingo.com.  We’ve been using this program for a couple of years. This program teaches in a very kid-friendly way with a lot of games and repetition. After this year, I believe I will move my 4th grader up to a higher difficulty program. I'll let you know when I find an excellent option!

Typing and Computer Skills

I’ve been teaching using Typing.com. I set up a free teacher account and assign work to my daughter. I can even post instructions for her. I plan to create some of my own Computer Skills curriculum later in the year to add to this. I'll keep you updated.

Coding

As an elective, my 4th grader is learning coding with Tynker.com.  This is something she has enjoyed for the last couple years. I look at this as an independent study. I've put it on her schedule for one hour a week. But, I never assign work for this. She does it totally on her own and works on it well after her one hour per week.

Socializing and Fun

Finally, for some reinforcement, socializing and fun, I put her on AdventureAcademy.com a couple of times a week.  There are lessons and skills reinforcement as well as games, chat and more. It's like an educational MMO with restricted chat.

Take what you like from this article and manipulate it to your child’s needs.  I will pop back over to this page with updates on special projects that you can add in whenever you like to help boost your child’s learning.

Purim is coming up in a few weeks. The holiday is certainly going to look different this year. Purim is the last holiday we celebrated pre-pandemic. There were parties, catching up with neighbors, costumes, visitors and as always...so...much...nosh. If you don't know, Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrated with costumes, noise, and giving food to others. We always deliver a number of beautiful baskets of goodies to friends and neighbors. We often get invited in to chat and catch up. It's an extremely social holiday. I feel like this year, we'll be playing ding-dong-ditch. Set the basket by the door, ring, run 6 feet away. Whatever it will be, we will definitely be making all of our favorite triangle-shaped foods (another symbol of the holiday). These were one of my first blog recipes, and they are as popular as ever for their taste and uniqueness. I hope you enjoy these Crispy Fish Wontons. Whatever you are making, have a safe holiday b'simcha! (with joy). https://candidlydelicious.com/crispy-fish-wontons/ .
